The World Is Eating Off The Congo (DRC)

Imagine a land so rich in natural resources that it could power the world—literally. A land bursting with gold, diamonds, copper, coltan, and cobalt. Now imagine the people of that land living in abject poverty, fear, and devastation, while the rest of the world profits.
And yes, the world is benefiting from their soil, blood, sweat, tears, & of course, global silence.

See, behind our smartphones, our car batteries (think Lithium batteries), our gold necklaces, & pricey diamonds, etc. there’s a country being pillaged so that the world can have shiny convenience.
That country is the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)!!!

And while global powers profit, the people of Congo, not so much.  The DRC is not poor, it

For centuries, the Congo has been stripped bare—first by kings and colonizers, now by corporations and quiet complicity.

China controls the mining operations (cobalt & copper).
The U.S. (Apple, Tesla, Google) profits from the tech via distant middlemen to dodge accountability.
Europe reaps the rewards from colonial leftovers with the trading and corporate holdings.
The UAE exports the gold.
Yet Congo remains one of the poorest countries in the world.

Children are working in dangerous mines and areas that we wouldn’t dare let our children near.
Women & girls are being sexually exploited and kidnapped. Villages and ethnic minorities are being erased through Genocides. Millions are starving and displaced. Forests decimated, profits and resources exported. Generations are grieving because their futures are being stolen and sold to the highest bidders. This isn’t “just” economics, it’s exploitation!

At Spiced Bronz, we believe in joy, but we also believe in justice. We believe that truth can be a form of care and silence is not protection, it’s permission.

The more that I learn about the suffering of others and our shared stories, the more that I realize, that I too bought into the nice to haves without knowing the backstories or trauma that I had a hand in.

So, let’s learn. Share. Speak up. Buy with purpose and divest from those that do not see or care about the harm that they cause. Because the world may be eating off the Congo and many others, but we can choose not to be or no longer be part of that system.

  1. I enjoyed reading all the information on this site. I learned so much new information. I am so happy to see a space such as this. It’s rare to see someone wanting to understand and invite others to learn and share and grow. No sugar coating, just facts and truth. Black and brown people and immigrants, a platform for us all. No data, no shade. I look forward to learning and sharing. Covid woke me up and I have been reading and learning and unlearning ever since. I locked my hair, I learned to love myself and my skin. I love my brown skin and I am learning more about my people and the struggles they over came that we are continuing to overcome even now.

    1. I think that if we have an open mind and are truly in the mode to learn, it can move forward together. There is so much to unwrap and so much to give, we just have to start. We are a beautiful and creative people. We set the tone and tempo for a lot of cultural aspects.
